How to Survive a Tornado

Follow these expert tips to increase your chances of surviving a tornado:

In a building

  • Put as many walls as possible between you and the wind (e.g., a closet, bathroom, or interior hallway).
  • Put on a football or bicycle helmet (seriously).
  • Don’t open any windows (for some reason there’s an urban myth out there that this is a good idea).

In a vehicle

  • Don’t take shelter under an overpass (it acts as a wind tunnel, making matters worse).
  • Drive to a building (fast-food restaurant walk-in coolers are good shelters).
  • Find an escape route that takes you 90 degrees from the tornado’s path instead of trying to outrun it.
  • If you can’t make it to a building, abandon your vehicle and try to get into a nearby ditch or culvert.
